About Us - CAMPAIGN SAINT VRAIN
This website was conceived to promote general awareness regarding the risks and unfulfilled potentials of the Saint Vrain River corridor to the City of Longmont.  The latent risks associated with the St. Vrain’s floodplain to the economy and life-safety of Longmont’s residents are enormous.  This site is part of a larger effort to bring awareness about general sustainability solutions for the built environment in Colorado, and beyond.
To be clear, although a catchy title – we are NOT - “CAMPAIGN"-ing in a political sense, nor are we advocating for any particular ballot measure, referendum, or candidate of the City, but rather, we are promoting general information to help Longmont’s citizens make wise choices regarding this important geo-physical area of the City and its future.
The site is provided courtesy of One Construction & Design, Inc., Mike Schnatzmeyer (owner/founder), and by volunteers like you for the benefit of all of Longmont’s residents, businesses and visitors.  Mike holds a B.E.N.V.D degree from the University of Colorado/Boulder.  ENVD stands for Environmental Design, which emphasizes the approach of a multi-disciplinary paradigm for viewing and engaging physical form design, especially with regards to urban and regional planning.  By multi-disciplinary, is meant looking at an issue from a broad range of perspectives from urban planning to financial, recreational, social, cultural, economic, jobs, tourism, environmental protection, transportation and more.
A little background:  In 2006, One Construction/ Mike purchased a small piece of property near the Saint Vrain River as a long term investment.  The property is known to be in the floodplain of the river, but Mike’s attention quickly turned from the potential of this investment to the potential of the Saint Vrain Corridor for the entire City.  He asked himself the question: “why is the City turning its back on this valuable resource, and wasting such a “golden” opportunity?”  Well, it appeared that Mike had found a “calling” for doing much more than would benefit his own interests, and for the next several years has engaged city leaders in asking themselves the same question.
To quote Mike at a typical City meeting; “Golden, Denver, Breckenridge, Estes Park, Pueblo, and thousands of other cities throughout the U.S. have transformed themselves by re-envisioning their river corridors.  Longmont’s St. Vrain corridor is primarily man-made, and a disaster-in-waiting for the economy, life-safety and general well being of the city’s residents and environment.  It is time for Longmont to engage this issue and turn this overhanging liability into an amazing asset that drives the vitality of Longmont into the next century.”
Well, Mike’s passion for the issue over the past several years has finally gotten traction, and the City Council, at their February 2010 annual retreat voted to make the river corridor part of its workplan for the coming year.  Now it is time for Longmont residents to speak up and create their own future.
Will this going to be a future that jump-starts the City’s economic vitality, generates jobs, energizes the Twin Peaks Mall, and downtown, creates new recreational and smart-growth opportunities,…… or does the City continue to “turn its back” on the river, and year after year, roll the dice that a major flood won’t occur that could devastate the town’s well-being?  Join us in creating a positive future for Longmont.
A final note: One Construction & Design, Inc. is a "for-profit corporation".  Any contributions sent to us to help keep this website alive are NOT tax deductable. If you would like to contribute your time or energy towards co-creating a non-profit group, that may receive funding, or help found and be part of a Longmont “Neighborhood Group” regarding this issue, please send donations to Campaign Saint Vrain  (donations are not tax deductable)
